I was just in Italy this past Thursday and Friday visiting dealers and on Thursday I stumbled across a fitter doing a fit. I stood back and looked at the person being fitted and the fitter doing his job. After a few minutes of watching the fitter do his thing and never asking once to the customer how he was feeling, I politely asked if I could do something. I went out the the car, brought in my bike fit case, took out the lasers and wow, the fitter could not have been further away from going in the right direction. The interaction between the two went something like this ...
C - When I pedal my right leg hurts as its about 1.5cm shorter
F - No problem, let me see your shoe and let me make some adjustments
C - I am not sure, this feels different but I will grow into the sensation
F - It will take you a while to feel the improvements in your pedal stroke
C - ok, I will let you know how I feel the next few times I go riding
... then out came the lasers (after I asked if I could show something)
ME - Do you mind if I adjust your right shoe?
C - Ok, what are you going to do to it?
ME - I am going to add a 3mm spacer if this is ok with the fitter
C&F - OK
ME - I install a 3mm Keo LLS and add a varus wedge and move the cleat all the way out
C - This feel great, I feel the pedal and almost all the pressure on the outside of the foot has gone.
ME - Enjoy your ride
Last month when visiting another shop in Italy, a customer purchasing an extremely nice Pinarello Dogma was having cleats put on his shoes. How were they installed? The sales person asked the mechanic to install the cleats; a caliper comes out of a drawer, the shoe width is measured, the cleat is placed all the way forward and right smack centered in the middle of the shoe. I wonder how his first ride felt ...
